Solar Magnetic Storms and Space Weather

Professor W. Jeffrey Hughes explains the dynamics of the Sun's magnetic storms and how this "space weather" can cause serious damage to electric grids, satellites, aviation and all other types of electronic communication on Earth. He describes solar cycles and the dynamics of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We learn why it is very hard to predict when a CME can actually penetrate the Earth's protective magnetosphere.
